Chapter Eleven

The jailhouse door creaked shut behind me as I stepped out into the warm spring air. My heart raced, filled with determination and purpose.

“Time to pay Janet a little visit,” I muttered under my breath, striding towards my car. I texted Thora that I was on my way over to see them.

I climbed into my truck, gripping the steering wheel tightly. As I navigated the familiar winding roads toward my next destination.

Maybe all this was just some freak accident? But as quickly as the words formed in my mind, a stone sank into my stomach. It just felt like there was more to the story than an accidental allergic reaction and heart attack. Holland may not have been the most pleasant person, but no one deserved such a tragic fate.

Suddenly, there was a loud bang, jolting me from my thoughts. My car veered to the right, and I struggled to maintain control as it shuddered violently beneath me.

“Are you kidding me?” I exclaimed, pulling over to the side of the road. A flat tire—just what I needed.

I stepped out of the car and surveyed the damage, my frustration mounting with every passing second. Time was slipping through my fingers, and I needed to speak to Janet before she had a chance to slip away—or worse, concoct a story to cover her tracks. Rolling up my sleeves, I set to work on the tire. The sooner I got back on the road, the better.

The sun beat down relentlessly on my back as I wrestled with the spare tire. My hands were slick with sweat and grease, making it difficult to grip the lug wrench. With a grunt of frustration, I managed to loosen one of the lug nuts, but my heart sank when I noticed the bent rim.

“Of all the rotten luck,” I muttered under my breath, wiping the sweat from my brow with the back of my hand. The situation was bleak; there was no way I could continue driving on that damaged rim. My gaze fell upon a faded sign for Darryl's Tow Truck Services. Just what I needed. A tow truck could get me to Hilda and Thora's place. Time was of the essence, and I couldn't afford any more delays.

I fished my cell phone out of my pocket but immediately put it away. Nancy, Darryl's wife, leaned out the passenger window of their tow truck and gave me an enthusiastic wave.

“Hey there, Autumn!” she called out cheerily. “Looks like you could use some help!”

“Sure could,” I replied, grateful for their assistance.

Darryl pulled over in front of my car and hopped out. Darryl and Nancy were long-time residents of the Spur City area, but would soon be moving to Vermont to be closer to their son. It was a small grace that they were still here for another week or so.

“Thank you so much. It was pretty lucky you were passing by.”

“No problem, Autumn,” Darryl replied with a grin, as he inspected the rim. “Can we drop you off somewhere before I get your truck to the shop?”

“That’d be great.
